On Friday, the Trinamool Congress filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) regarding the reported public flogging of Muslim men by individuals identified as “Gujarat Police personnel.” TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale expressed concern that the NHRC had not taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and emphasized that despite the absence of a formal complaint, the TMC had submitted one to the NHRC.
Gokhale shared a copy of the police complaint, asserting that viral videos on social media depicted Muslim men being “tied” to a pole in Undhela village in Kheda. The police alleged that this was a form of “punishment” for the men accused of stone-pelting. The complaint contended that the police had assumed the roles of judge and executioner, subjecting a group of young men to inhumane brutality solely based on their Muslim identity. It characterized the incident as an instance of police brutality and atrocities against religious minorities, particularly preceding the Gujarat Assembly polls.
The incident occurred in Undhela village in the Kheda district of Gujarat, reportedly stemming from stone-pelting at a garba event on Monday night. The village sarpanch, Indravadan Patel, had organized the garba outside a temple, which faced a mosque and shared a wall with a madrasa.
